The Kowloon Hotel Review: Excellent Value in Tsim Sha Tsui (4-star, MTR at the Door)

If it’s your first time in Hong Kong and you’ve decided to stay in Tsim Sha Tsui, The Kowloon Hotel is one of the easiest, best-value choices you can make.
I stayed here as part of a self-funded hotel comparison trip and tried several hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui that same week. The Kowloon Hotel stood out for one reason above all else: location.
This is a solid 4-star hotel in one of Hong Kong’s most expensive neighbourhoods, which is exactly why it represents such good value. You’re steps from the MTR, a short walk to the Star Ferry, and right in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui without paying five-star prices.
It’s not a design hotel and it doesn’t have luxury extras like a spa or pool. What it does offer is a clean, quiet room, seamless transport access, and a base that makes getting around Hong Kong genuinely easy, especially on a first trip.
Don’t have time to read the whole post? I Recommend The Kowloon Hotel — Comfortable, great location, close to the MTR, & decent price.
It’s also a particularly good option for a short stay or stopover. With the MTR right outside the door, you can check out and connect to the Airport Express with minimal effort, a small thing that makes a big difference at the end of a trip.
Bottom line: The Kowloon Hotel is a solid 4-star choice if you want to stay in Tsim Sha Tsui and value location and transport access over luxury amenities. Being steps from the MTR and waterfront makes a real difference, especially on a first trip.
👉 This review is part of my short, first-timer-friendly guide to the best mid-range hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui.
✅ Why The Kowloon Hotel Works So Well for a First Trip
- Brilliant Location Right in Tsim Sha Tsui, just steps from the harbour and Star Ferry.
- Super Convenient Easily one of the most convenient hotels near the MTR in Hong Kong: the MTR station is literally outside the door.
- Great Value Comfortable, quiet rooms at 4-star prices in a neighbourhood dominated by far more expensive hotels.
- Excellent Buffet Breakfast Genuinely one of the best I’ve had in a Hong Kong hotel.
- Ideal for First-Timers to Hong Kong Easy to navigate, close to the sights, and well set up for tourists.
- Safe and Low-Key I walked back alone every night and always felt completely comfortable.
If I wanted something more stylish or was staying longer, I’d go for somewhere like The Mira. But for convenience, value, and location, the Kowloon Hotel is easily one of my best picks for first-time travellers to Hong Kong.

Why I Chose The Kowloon Hotel

I first came across the Kowloon Hotel while researching the Salisbury YMCA. I was looking for something in Tsim Sha Tsui, close to the waterfront and MTR, but still affordable. The Salisbury YMCA has been on my radar for a couple of years, but every time I go to book it the price always feels too high for what it offers. I’ve also seen a few too many reviews mentioning traffic noise, and I didn’t love the idea of starting my trip with that kind of gamble.
When I started digging into The Kowloon Hotel reviews, one detail jumped out immediately: the hotel is literally next to the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station. I’ve stayed in a lot of places in Hong Kong over the years, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hotel entrance that close to the MTR before. For a trip where I knew I’d be moving around the city all day, that kind of access sealed the deal.
The Kowloon Hotel’s Tsim Sha Tsui location is also in a fantastic spot for first-time visitors. You’re right in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, just behind the Peninsula Hotel, one of the most expensive (and famous) hotels in Kowloon (and Hong Kong, for that matter). From here, the waterfront, museums, ferries, shopping, and endless food options are all within easy walking distance.
To tell you the truth, I wasn’t expecting much from The Kowloon Hotel. The price was noticeably lower than many mid-range hotels in the area and the photos looked fine, so I assumed it might feel a bit basic or dated.
But the hotel genuinely surprised me.
This is a proper 4-star hotel: plain, yes, but well-kept, quiet, and honestly more comfortable than I expected. No pool, spa or gym, though (although guests can use the pool and gym at the nearby YMCA for a fee). There’s three decent restaurants on site, and the whole place has that efficient, no-fuss feel that works when you’re mostly out sightseeing anyway.
If you’re looking for a well-priced, mid-range hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui that’s comfy, and want unbeatable MTR transport right at your doorstep, this one’s for you.
What I Liked:
✅ The Tsim Sha Tsui Location & MTR Convenience.
Absolutely ideal for a first visit to Hong Kong. You’re in the thick of it, moments from the Star Ferry, Victoria Harbour, museums, malls, and Kowloon Park. And the MTR entrance is practically built into the hotel. You couldn’t be better placed to explore the city.
✅ Good value for the area.
Hong Kong isn’t cheap, and Tsim Sha Tsui is one of its priciest neighbourhoods. This hotel offers 4-star comfort at a price that makes sense for the location — clean, no-frills, and importantly, not tired or depressing.
✅ Comfortable, functional rooms.
I had a bright, sunny room with space to move, plenty for a solo traveller, and enough for a couple too. Not stylish, but fresh-feeling and functional. Everything worked. Everything was clean.
✅ Good Bed + Surprisingly Quiet.
Massive bed with proper linens, none of that scratchy hotel poly-blend. And despite the location, it was quiet at night. No honking horns. No slamming doors. I slept better here than in some “fancier” hotels.
What I Didn’t Like:
🛑 Honestly? Very Little.
I usually have a few caveats when I review hotels, but I don’t have a real complaint here. Sure, it’s not a design hotel and there’s no pool, but for the price and location, it over delivers. I’d stay again in a heartbeat.

Arrival: Why Airport Express + Taxi Is the Smart Move

Getting to The Kowloon Hotel from the Airport
The easiest way to get to The Kowloon Hotel is to take the Airport Express train to Kowloon Station, then hop in a taxi for the last stretch. It’s quick, straightforward, and way less stressful than trying to navigate the MTR right off a long-haul flight.
- Airport Express to Kowloon Station: 24 minutes, HKD$105–120
- Taxi from Kowloon Station to hotel: 10 minutes, around HKD$50 (USD$5)
Technically, you could take the Airport Express all the way to Central and then switch to the Tsuen Wan line for Tsim Sha Tsui. And yes, The Kowloon Hotel is practically sitting on top of an MTR exit (in fact, I believe it’s one of the most conveniently located hotels near the MTR in Hong Kong). But save that move for later in your trip, once you’ve found your footing and aren’t dragging a suitcase on zero sleep.
It might save you a few bucks, but it’s a headache you don’t need on arrival day. Trust me: Airport Express + taxi is the smoother call.
Quick note about the taxi stand at Kowloon Station: the taxi stand at Kowloon Station is a bit of a maze… You haven’t gone the wrong way. Keep going — the taxi queue is just around the corner.
Arriving After Midnight?
If your flight lands late or immigration takes forever, don’t count on the Airport Express because it stops around 1 a.m.
Here’s what I recommend if you’re arriving after hours:
👉Option 1: Pre-book a private airport transfer. More expensive, but totally worth it when you’re half-asleep and just want to get to bed.
👉Option 2: Stay at the Regal Airport Hotel for the first night. I’ve done this. It’s connected to the terminal, so you can walk straight there in five minutes. The room was a bit tired, but I was clean and horizontal by 2 a.m. Can’t argue with that.
Checking In at The Kowloon Hotel
Check-in was smooth and surprisingly flexible. I arrived mid-morning, expecting to drop my bags and wander until the afternoon, but they handed me a room key right away. That almost never happens in Hong Kong, and was a great perk because I really needed a shower.
The entrance is tucked around the back of the Peninsula Hotel. So no, you won’t have harbour views, but wow, the location is something else. This is prime Tsim Sha Tsui real estate, with unbeatable transport access right outside the door.
I’ll also mention here that I needed some emergency printing done due to an issue with a visa. The front desk handled it quickly and didn’t charge me.
The Room: Sunny & Comfy

I booked the cheapest category—just a standard “superior” room—and ended up with a sunny corner room that was more spacious than I expected. The first thing I noticed was how immaculate the room was. Spotlessly clean. No scuff marks, no stray hairs, no mystery stains. That alone put me at ease right away.
The decor was plain but totally fine, nothing stylish, but it didn’t feel run-down or tired. The windows let in lots of natural light, which made the room feel bright and pleasant.
It did get a bit warm in the afternoon sun, and I initially thought the air conditioning wasn’t working. Turned out I just hadn’t figured out the older-style controls. Housekeeping came quickly, showed me how to use it, and once it kicked in, it worked well.
The air con wasn’t too noisy either. No loud hum or clicking, which I really appreciate. Noisy air con and fridges are personal pet peeves, and this room avoided both.
The bed was a win. I’ve stayed in a few lower-priced Hong Kong hotels in Kowloon where the beds are hard enough to double as yoga blocks but this one was comfortable, with proper pillows and decent linens. I slept well.
Noise-wise, I could faintly hear some street traffic, but nothing disruptive. I’m very sensitive to noise at night, and this didn’t bother me at all. No hallway noise either, good soundproofing and proper blackout curtains made it easy to wind down.
Bathroom was basic but functional: small shower, decent water pressure. The water could’ve been a touch warmer, but not a dealbreaker. The usual in-room amenities were there: desk, kettle, mugs. No surprises, no letdowns.
Here’s what I loved about the room:
✅ Spotlessly clean. No scuff marks, no weird smells, no mystery stains. It felt instantly comfortable.
✅ Surprisingly spacious. I booked the cheapest room category and still ended up with a sunny corner room that didn’t feel cramped. Better than most similarly priced hotels in Kowloon I’ve tried.
✅ Bright and pleasant. Big windows let in natural light, which made the space feel calm and airy. Simple and un-fancy, yes, but not worn out or depressing. It hit that sweet spot between value and comfort.
✅ Quiet air conditioning. Once I figured out the older controls (with help from housekeeping), it worked well (and quietly). No humming or clicking.
✅ Comfortable bed. Not rock-hard like some hotels in Hong Kong. Proper pillows, decent linens, and I slept well every night.
✅ Low noise levels. I’m sensitive to sound, but there was barely any street noise and no hallway disruptions.
✅ Basic but acceptable bathroom. Small shower with decent pressure. Water could’ve been hotter, but it did the job.
Overall, the room hit exactly the balance I was hoping for: clean, simple, and comfortable without feeling cheap or shabby.

The Kowloon Hotel Location: Prime Tsim Sha Tsui Spot with MTR at the Door

If you’re staying in Tsim Sha Tsui, The Kowloon Hotel is hard to beat for pure convenience.
The Kowloon Hotel sits just one street back from the waterfront, so you’re not right on the promenade, but close enough that you can grab a coffee in the morning and be walking beside Victoria Harbour in minutes. The hotel is an easy base for things like the Symphony of Lights, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, or hopping on the Star Ferry to Central.
This is one of those neighbourhoods where you can just head out and explore — I’ve listed the best things to do in Tsim Sha Tsui, all within easy walking distance.

When you’re ready to explore deeper into Hong Kong, there’s an MTR entrance right outside the hotel. For anyone comparing hotels near MTR in Hong Kong, this kind of proximity is gold.
Tsim Sha Tsui is a major MTR interchange, which means most places you’ll want to go in Kowloon are only a few stops away. During my stay, I could be back in my room — shoes off, feet up, with a cup of tea — within minutes of finishing the day. That matters more than you think when your feet are wrecked.
When it was time to fly out, getting to the airport was effortless. I checked out, walked a couple of minutes to the MTR, and was at Central in no time to connect with the Airport Express. It took all the stress out of departure day.
After decades of visiting, I can honestly say I’ve never stayed in a hotel with a more conveniently located MTR station. That, combined with easy access to the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, makes the Kowloon Hotel an exceptionally easy base for a first trip.
If you prefer a quieter base still in Tsim Sha Tsui, try The Royal Garden Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui East.

Food & Drink: Excellent Buffet Breakfast

There are four main dining options at the hotel, plus basic room service. Here’s a quick rundown, plus my take on the buffet breakfast, which I actually tried.
👉 Coffee Corner (Lobby, G/F) Tucked into the hotel lobby, this spot serves single-origin Italian coffee (brewed to order), along with light meals like sandwiches and seasonal salads.
👉The Window Café (2/F) This is where the hotel serves its buffet breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The focus is international—think dim sum, Thai curries, Japanese sushi, Indian dishes, and European classics. If you’re in the mood for variety, this is your best bet.
I had the breakfast buffet here and it was genuinely excellent, probably the best I’ve had in a Hong Kong hotel in a long while. Plenty of Western options (bacon, eggs, sausages, etc.), a solid continental spread (good pastries and fruit), and classic Chinese breakfast dishes. Bonus: good coffee and a nice, relaxed setting. Well worth it.
👉Loong Yat Heen (2/F) If you’re after a proper sit-down Chinese meal, this is the place. It’s known for its dim sum and classic Cantonese dishes. I didn’t eat here this time, but based on the breakfast quality, I’d expect the food here to be good.
👉Middle Row Bar (2/F) More of a drinks-and-snacks place, good for winding down with a wine or afternoon tea. They do two types of afternoon tea sets daily. The vibe leans business-casual rather than cozy, but it’s convenient if you want to stay in.
👉 Room Service There’s a small and basic room service menu—burgers, club sandwiches, fried rice, that sort of thing. I didn’t try it, but prices were very reasonable for a hotel. For example:
- Wagyu Beef Burger: HKD$168
- Wok-fried Beef Noodles with Black Pepper Sauce: HKD$128
Final Thought
If the breakfast is anything to go by, the rest of the food here is likely to be good. It’s not a foodie destination by any stretch, but if you’re after convenience, comfort, and a few solid meals between outings, you’ll be well taken care of.

Facilities: Off-Site Only (and You Might Not Bother)

There’s no gym or pool inside The Kowloon Hotel, but they do have an arrangement with the YMCA fitness centre across the street. You can pay for access to their gym and 25-metre indoor pool.
Personally, I like a swim and a workout as much as the next girl, but only if it’s right there in the hotel. I’m not usually up for sorting out passes or walking to another building to make it happen. If that sounds like you too, it’s something to factor in.
That said, the lack of in-house facilities doesn’t really bother me here. This hotel works best as a base. It’s ideal if you’re out most of the day sightseeing, market-hopping, ferry-catching, or exploring new neighbourhoods, and just want somewhere comfortable and quiet to come back to.
If you’re after a hotel where you hang out in plush surroundings and book a massage between spa dips, this isn’t that. (Check out The Mira or The Royal Garden instead.)
