The Harbourview in Wan Chai on Hong Kong island blew me away for the price. If you’re after a comfortable, well-located hotel that doesn’t cost a fortune, and you’re okay with a firm bed, this gem of a hotel is one of the best-value stays I’ve found in decades of coming to Hong Kong.

Don’t let the “Chinese YMCA” part throw you off. The Harbourview isn’t a hostel or a dorm, it’s a proper, full-service hotel in Wan Chai that’s modern, quiet, clean, and safe.

Proper hotel, not a hostel Despite the “YMCA” in the name, it’s a full-service hotel. Private rooms, reception, lifts. No dorm beds or shared bathrooms.
Modern, comfortable rooms My refurbished room on the 17th floor felt more like a business hotel: clean, well-designed, and surprisingly spacious.
Quiet and safe Peaceful at night and an easy 10-minute walk back from the MTR. I felt totally safe.

Why I Chose the Harbourview Hotel Hong Kong

For this trip, I had one goal when it came to accommodation: keep costs low, but still feel comfortable. I didn’t need a spa or gym, just a quiet, clean room in a central location where I could crash at the end of the day.

Here’s what I had on my hotel wish list:

Good value for money (not ultra-budget, but affordable)
Centrally located—either in Central, Causeway Bay, or Wan Chai
Walking distance to the MTR
Somewhere that felt quiet and safe
Not awful-looking (I’m picky about photos and reviews)

I usually warn against going too budget in Hong Kong. I won’t book anything rated below four stars. In my experience, the quality really drops off once you go lower.

At first, I hesitated with this place. I assumed the Harbourview was a hostel (it is operated by the Chinese YMCA but it is definitely not a hostel), and the price seemed too good to be true. But after digging into the reviews and photos, I gave it a shot. I’m so glad I did because The Harbourview far exceeded my expectations.

What I Liked:

✅ The price
When I stayed, the Harbourview fell into that rare sweet spot in Hong Kong: budget-to-mid-range, but with modern décor, great service, and a quiet, comfortable room. Hard to find, especially in such a good location.

✅ Modern, comfortable rooms
I was on the 17th floor in a newly refurbished room: bright, clean, and smartly designed. Think more executive-business feel than budget. The photos online were actually accurate (for once).

✅ Proper blackout curtains
Total darkness at night. Not a sliver of light. If you’re light-sensitive or jet-lagged, you’ll love this.

✅ Harbour view
Not full floor-to-ceiling windows, but I still had a solid view of Kowloon across the water. I spent more time than I’d like to admit sipping tea at the desk and just watching the harbour. Pretty magical at night.

✅ Surprise gym
I wasn’t even looking for a gym this trip, but there it was. Decent-sized, and spotless.

✅ Very good service & nice vibe
Check-in was smooth, staff were genuinely helpful, and the overall feel was relaxed, less corporate, more low-key professional.

✅ Late Checkout
Check-out time is 12 PM, which is a nice little bonus. Harbourview will also store your luggage. Super handy if you’re not planning on heading to the airport until later.

What I Disliked:

🛑 The bed
In my opinion, hard beds are a crime against humanity. And the one I had at the Harbourview was harder than a surfboard. Having said that, I’ve travelled far and wide in Asia, and hard beds are more common than softer ones, so the Harbourview is not on it’s own here.

Arrival: Good Location with Easy Access

I arrived at the Harbourview during the day, coming in from the Central MTR station. I decided to grab a taxi from the station, which turned out to be a good call. It was easy for the driver to find the hotel, and the ride took about 10 minutes. Cost me around USD $5. Quick, simple, no drama.

If you’re coming from Hong Kong airport, I’d recommend one of two options. If you want zero stress, book a private transfer, door-to-door and smooth. But if you’re comfortable navigating on your own and want to save a bit of money, take the Airport Express train to Central, then hop in a taxi from there. It’s fast, efficient, and you avoid the hassle of dragging luggage through the streets.

What I wouldn’t suggest is taking the MTR to Wan Chai Station and walking to the hotel from there with bags in tow. The route involves pedestrian overpasses and staircases, and unless you really love a challenge, it’s not worth the effort. I’ve seen travellers stuck at the bottom of steep stairs with roller bags and that glazed “how did I end up here” look. Not ideal after a flight.

Once I settled in, I actually appreciated the hotel’s location more than I expected. The area around the hotel feels calm and safe, and it’s just a few minutes’ walk from the Wan Chai waterfront and Convention Centre, and about 10 minutes from the MTR, and a mix of local shops, a traditional wet market, and a few streets that are fun to wander without being tourist-heavy.

Wan Chai’s got history. It used to be all neon and nightlife, but that’s dialled down in recent years. Now the vibe is more business-meets-residential: busy on weekdays, quieter in the evenings, and easy to navigate.

Bonus: You’re also close to one of Hong Kong’s most underrated ferry routes—the Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry. If you’re heading across the harbour and want a scenic, peaceful ride without the Central crowds, this one’s a gem. I used it a few times when I wanted a breather from the MTR, and every single time I was glad I did.

So while the hotel isn’t smack in the middle of the city’s buzz, it’s well connected and offers just the right amount of breathing room. It’s central enough to be convenient, but far enough to feel like you’re getting a little local perspective.

Check-in was fast and smooth. There were no issues with my booking. Staff were efficient and pleasant to deal with. The Harbourview doesn’t have porters to help with luggage, and you find you’re own way to your room. The upside is you don’t need cash for tips.

The Room: Wow

When I walked into the room, I was genuinely gobsmacked. It looked like something from a proper executive hotel; I really wasn’t expecting it to be this good for the price I paid. Everything was spotless and newly renovated in a nice modern design.

There was a good-sized desk and chair, and a little seating area. The layout made smart use of space, and the room itself felt generous: not cramped, not awkward. I knew straight away I’d scored a bargain.

And yes, there was a harbour view. Clear and unobstructed.

Here’s what I loved about the room:

✅ The décor. Modern, well put together, and just a nice space to hang out in between outings.
✅ Desk by the window. Perfect setup for a bit of blogging or journalling. Plus I could stare out at the harbour between paragraphs.
✅ The bathroom. Nicely updated with a proper walk-in shower and excellent water pressure. No complaints.
✅ Quiet. Really well insulated. I couldn’t hear street noise or other guests. Not even the hum of the air con or the mini-fridge.

The bathroom looked brand new, with a modern fit-out and great shower pressure. No bath, but honestly, you wouldn’t expect one at this price point. It also came with a white fluffy robe, which was a nice little touch.

The only downside for me was the super hard bed. But if you don’t care about that, the Harbourview is a definite 10 out of 10.

Facilities: Restaurants & Gym

The Harbourview has two onsite restaurants: Mezzo and The Harbour Restaurant. Full disclaimer: I didn’t eat at either, but only because I didn’t get the chance.

The guest reviews are solid, and both of Harbourview’s restaurants offer lunch and dinner buffets at reasonable prices. Guests also rate the breakfast as good value, so that’s worth checking out if you are going to stay.

Multiple mounted TVs offer entertainment, and the space features rubber flooring and neutral-toned walls for a clean, modern feel.

The gym was a pleasant surprise. It’s compact, but has a few cardio machines and a decent free weights section. I wasn’t expecting one at all, but it’s more than enough to keep your training routine on track.
