Welcome, I’m Deborah…

Hong Kong can feel like a lot. It’s fast, it’s dense, and if you don’t know how it works, it’s easy to waste time, money, and energy figuring things out.

That’s where I come in.

I created Hong Kong Made Easy for one reason: to help simplify Hong Kong for first time visitors. This site is a practical, straight-talking guide to help you plan your trip easily: where to stay, what to prioritise, what’s actually worth your time (and what isn’t).

And once you’ve got Hong Kong sorted, I also help you think beyond it, because one of the best things about Hong Kong is how easily it connects you to the rest of Asia. Places like Shanghai (OMG the food is wonderful there!) and Japan are just a short flight away, and I’ll show you how to build those into your trip without overcomplicating things.

Why Trust Me?

Hong Kong Solo Travel Family Photo 1

I’ve been coming to Hong Kong for over 45 years. My family moved here in the 1970s when I was little, and I grew up as an expat, and went to school and high school here.

These days I’m based in New Zealand, but Hong Kong is my second home and I return all the time (at least once a year, but usually more). I know all the best spots, understand the culture, and, above all, you can trust my insights and recommendations.

From Hong Kong, I’ve travelled extensively across the region — including Japan, Thailand, India, Malaysia, and many more. I’ve done this as a solo traveller, on organised group tours, and with friends and family.

Why Hong Kong Made Easy Is Different

There’s no shortage of Hong Kong content online.

What makes this site different is my unique Hong Kong experience.

I lived here as a local and now return frequently as a visitor. That gives me a unique combination—I know Hong Kong well, but I also understand what it’s like to experience it as a traveller.

I focus on the things that actually matter: clear and simple explanations of how things work (like how to use the local transport), where to stay so you can make the most of your time, and how to see the key sights without overcomplicating your trip.

Everything here is based on decades of real experience—what I’ve done, what I’ve tested, and what I’d genuinely recommend to someone planning their first visit. You won’t get that from generic travel content.

And because I come back often, I keep up with how Hong Kong is changing. What worked 10 years ago isn’t always what I’d recommend now. Everything on this site reflects what I’d tell someone planning their trip today.
